200-hour Neutral Salt Spray (NSS) validation for DMC resin insulators

200 Hours NSS on DMC Insulators — What It Really Means for Coastal & New-Energy Panels

When a procurement spec says “200 h neutral salt spray”, most buyers think it’s about the plastic.

In a DMC (Dough Moulding Compound) busbar insulator, it isn’t.

The unsaturated-polyester matrix itself does not rust. The real test is the metal insert system — threaded brass, steel-zinc, or stainless studs molded into the DMC body — and the resin-to-metal interface where capillary salt creep starts.

At DOWE / DUWAI Electric, our DMC standoff and busbar insulators are now routinely validated at 200 h NSS (GB/T 10125-2021 ≙ ISO 9227) for overseas switchgear, PV combiner boxes, EV charging piles and coastal low-voltage cabinets. Here is the engineering context behind that number.

1. Standard basis — not “salt fog”, but a defined protocol

We run Neutral Salt Spray (NSS), not AASS or CASS:

  • Solution: 50 ± 5 g/L NaCl, pH 6.5–7.2 at 25 °C

  • Chamber temp: 35 ± 2 °C

  • Settling rate: 1.0–2.0 mL / 80 cm²·h

  • Duration: 200 h continuous spray

  • Judgment: GB/T 10125 + GB/T 6461 rating; no red rust on insert substrate, no rust ring bleeding from the DMC/metal seam, resin body free of blistering/cracking

200 h NSS sits in the medium-duty corrosion bracket (C4-lean environments: coastal 1–5 km, humid industrial rooms, containerized PV stations). It is far above the 48–96 h typical for indoor LV parts, yet below the 480–1000 h demanded by offshore platforms.

2. Where DOWE applies the 200 h requirement

  • Coastal PV & BESS enclosures — combiner box supports, DC busbar spacers

  • EV charging cabinets & energy-storage PCS — vibrating, dew-prone, near-sea-air sites

  • Export switchgear (IEC 61439 / UL 67 style panels) — where the buyer’s QA sheet simply says “inserts ≥ 200 h NSS”

  • Port machinery & HVAC electrical cubicles — C4 corrosive atmosphere, frequent condensation

For these, DOWE defaults to:

  • Insert options: 304/316 stainless, brass + Ni ≥ 8 µm, or steel + zinc-nickel / dacromet + sealer (plain blue-white zinc is not offered for 200 h NSS)

  • DMC body: halogen-free, UL 94 V-0, CTI > 600 V, RoHS/REACH verified

3. Process side — how 200 h is secured, not “hoped for”

Salt spray failure on a DMC insulator is rarely resin failure. It is insert rust or seam creep. DOWE controls three gates:

① Insert pre-treatment

Degreasing → micro-etch → plating/thickness locked (Ni 8–12 µm for brass, Zn-Ni 8–10 µm + inorganic sealer for steel). No thin decorative chrome.

② Interface sealing

Before molding, inserts get primer or epoxy edge-coat at the root; DMC compression profile (mold temp ±5 °C, two-stage pressure) minimizes shrink-gap and weld lines at the thread exit.

③ Finished-goods verification

  • 3–5 pieces per batch, full-assembled insulators (not bare inserts)

  • 200 h NSS, then rinse with flowing DI water, dry, photograph

  • Rating ≥ Rp 9 (GB/T 6461), zero red rust, zero rust halo at mold parting line

Optional: 96 h pre-screen before mass run, so plating vendors are qualified before tooling opens.

4. Why specify it explicitly

“Anti-salt-spray” written alone means nothing. In the DOWE quotation, the clause reads:

DMC insulator, metal insert XXX, 200 h NSS per GB/T 10125-2021, no base-metal red rust, insert-root seam no rust bleed, resin body intact.

That single sentence removes 90 % of later disputes between supplier, panel builder and end-user in Saudi, Vietnam, Poland or Chile.

DOWE / DUWAI Electric — 14+ years on DMC/BMC/SMC & APG epoxy insulators, 660 V–40.5 kV, laser-etched batch traceability, 200 h NSS available as standard option on SM / MNS / JYZ / EL series.

If your panel is going within 5 km of the sea, or into a desert-with-morning-dew solar farm, ask for the 200 h NSS insert package instead of the indoor-grade one. We’ll send the test photo and the plating spec together.
